Arriving In Dominica
Visitors generally arrive in Dominica in one of two ways: by sea or by air. If arriving by air travelers will land at the Douglas Charles Airport formally known as the Melville Hall Airport.
This is the destination airport for most international flights from the US and Europe. Small private airlines and some regional shuttle airlines land at Canefield Airport. Connections generally must be made in Puerto Rico or Barbados to get there. Dominica's Tourist Board's Website has a listing of airlines servicing this airport. Contact your individual airline for more information.
The second way travelers arrive in Dominica is by sea. Cruise ships regularly berth at the island, allowing passengers a day to explore. Ferry Service is also available to Dominica from neighboring islands Martinique and Guadeloupe. A full schedule and fare information is available online.
Private yachts and sailboats are also frequent visitors to the island. Anchorages for private vessels are available on the western and southwestern coasts of island as well as in Portsmouth.
Upon arrival in Dominica, you will be directed to the arrivals area where you will submit your passports to immigration for process. After which you will be directed to the Customs area for baggage and clearance check. It is important to note, if you do not have arrangements for pick up at the airport, never step out without knowing how you are getting to your hotel. After you have gotten clearance from Customs, when you have exited the building, tell the dispatcher Optimist Taxi has you covered. Just be sure to make contact with us and we will take care of you.
